SUSTAINABLE FASHION + ETHICAL LIVING

human dignity

“The person is the clearest reflection of the presence of God among us. To lay violent hands on the person is to come as close as we can to laying violent hands on God. To diminish the human person is to come as close as we can to diminishing God…From our recognition of the worth of all people under God flow the responsibilities of a ‘social’ morality.” – Cardinal Joseph Bernadin

“In Christ’s incarnation all of humanity regains the dignity of bearing the image of God. Whoever from now on attacks the least of the people attacks Christ, who took on human form and who in himself has restored the image of God for all who bear a human countenance.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I spent the last couple of hours working on a talk I'm giving to students at my church this week, entitled Christianity, Conscientious Consumerism, and the Sins of the Fast Fashion Industry. Above are a couple of epigraphs David P. Gushee uses in The Sacredness of Human Life. Another great resource is Shopping: Christian Explorations of Daily Living by Michelle A. Gonzalez.

I am a Christian. Fair trade issues and ethical living are inextricably tied to my faith values. It's refreshing to reflect on conscientious consumerism within the Gospel framework since it's something I rarely bother to do.
