the moral wardrobe: '70s vibes with ash & rose

Online ethical retailer, Ash & Rose, sent me a few items to sample and I'm extremely excited about it! The shop offers a curated selection of fair trade, eco-friendly, and sustainable brands, including some of my favorites like Tonle, Mata Traders, and Synergy. I believe that variety is the spice of life, so I love being able to shop a ton of great brands in one place (unlike middle school me, who only wanted things in the same brand with the same fiber content - I think I was going through something).

I decided to experiment with back lighting since I walked outside right as the sun was sinking below the houses. It's hard to balance shadow and light when the light is behind the subject, but I think it really suits my vintage-inspired ensemble, so I'm calling this shoot a success. I think I'll spend more time shooting in this direction as the days lengthen and see if I can improve on it.

You guys! I think spring is here! I had the most glorious weekend contra dancing, eating good food, cat sitting, exploring the local reservoir, and taking a day trip to groovy Richmond with friends. And with Daylight Savings, the days are long and full of sunshine. The best thing about winter is that it really makes you appreciate warm, sunny weather.

the moral wardrobe: nomads shrug and lariat necklace

I love this natural stone lariat necklace I received from Nomads. The beads are made of Amazonite, a mineral that is found in limited quantities in parts of Russia and the U.S. It goes with everything. All components were ethically sourced, then assembled in the UK. I paired it with Nomads' jersey shrug, a nice layering piece for chilly days. It has pretty ruching details on the sleeves and shoulder. This piece will also work well over sundresses (alas! all my tights were in the dryer when I got dressed today, so jeans had to do).

You probably noticed that I went back to a proper pixie. I always debate growing my hair out, then someone goes and asks me if I'm in high school and I promptly chop off my hair again. I don't mind looking young, but high school is a little too young. There are perks to looking like an adult.

I suppose I was inspired by the warm weather this week when creating these looks. The weather outside is perfect, but it can get a bit toasty behind the counter at the coffee shop. I should have gone bare legged today!

Each look includes a domestically produced top, fair trade bag, vintage skirt, and UK made sandals. Click on the styleboard for links to products.

the moral wardrobe: fusion

sporty style st6ethical outfit modcloth

This outfit is a cross between referee and newsie. Refersie? Newseree?

I always forget I have this hat. Freshman year of college, my then boyfriend and I walked all the way to the transit station to take the bus to the mall, where I bought this at Gap under his sartorial guidance. That was a very short relationship, but I'll always have this hat to remind me - for better or for worse - of that strange, idealistic time in my life.

Ethical choices are bolded below. Retailers taking steps to become more ethical are bolded in gray.

  • Hat - Gap, quite old

  • Top - made in USA via ModCloth

On a different note, 12 Months, 12 Goals is suffering from recent life chaos, but I plan to do a recap post for last month and start up this month by next week!

the moral wardrobe: snowed in

high waist flare jeans gr6bell bottoms

There's no better time for a blog update than today, because we're snowed in (by snowed in, I really mean we can't drive anywhere without shoveling out the whole road first; we could certainly take a walk outside).

I wore this earlier in the week. I almost always pair these jeans with moccasins for a truly vintage feel. I like that they verge on costume; I can pretend I'm a cool girl in the late 70s.

Ethical choices are bolded below. Retailers taking steps to become more ethical are bolded in gray.

  • Top - People Tree, fair trade

  • Jacket - secondhand

  • Jeans - made in USA

  • Moccasins - secondhand via ebay

  • Earrings - American Apparel
